Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas: Scandal, Sass, and a Hero Who Never Stood a Chance

If you love your historical romances bold, brazen, and bursting with sexual tension, Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas is pure catnip. From the very first pages, this book barrels into London society like a woman who absolutely refuses to behave, and honestly, we love to see it. Lily Lawson is reckless, unapologetic, and hiding secrets sharp enough to cut glass. Meanwhile, Alex, Lord Wolverton, is the sort of cold, arrogant earl who believes emotions are weaknesses… which means he is obviously doomed.

What makes Then Came You so addictive is the sheer audacity of its characters. Lily doesn’t just bend the rules; instead, she snaps them in half and tosses them into the Thames. Alex, on the other hand, spends most of the novel insisting he will never fall in love therefore, we know exactly how this is going to end. Still, the journey is delicious.

Moreover, the banter crackles, the chemistry smolders, and the power struggles feel both emotional and intensely physical. As a result, this book is impossible to read casually; it demands to be devoured.

High Drama with a Few Rough Edges

The biggest strength here is the passion. Kleypas writes desire with confidence, and the enemies-to-lovers tension is white-hot. Additionally, Lily is a heroine ahead of her time, which makes her wildly compelling. However, some plot elements lean heavily on melodrama, and Alex’s possessiveness may not work for every reader.

Still, if you enjoy alpha heroes with redemption arcs, this mostly lands.

Compared to Kleypas’s later, more polished works, Then Came You feels rawer and more outrageous.

Without spoiling, Lily’s ultimate reveal, the moment her past collides with Alex’s feelings, is unforgettable. It’s emotional, risky, and completely on-brand for her character.

Romanceaholic Approved

Yes, I absolutely recommend Then Came You. Because it’s bold. Because it’s dramatic. Because it reminds us that love is never tidy, but it is always worth the chaos.
