“I can fix him? No, darling. I’m here for the grovel.”
There was a time when romance readers looked at a complicated fictional man and thought:
Maybe love will change him.
We’ve evolved.
Now I need accountability.
You messed up?
Excellent. I’ll be over here while you reflect on your choices.
Take your time.
Maybe talk to someone.
Develop emotional intelligence.
Learn to communicate.
And when you’re ready, you may return with a sincere apology, changed behavior, and because this is romance a grovel so devastatingly good that I have to put the book down and stare at the ceiling for a minute.
Because I don’t want her doing all the emotional labor while he stands there looking tortured and handsome.
Sir.
Being attractive is not a redemption arc.
Give me the man who realizes exactly what he did.
Who doesn’t make excuses.
Who understands that I’m sorry is the beginning, not the entire process.
And then?
Let him prove it.
Quietly.
Consistently.
Repeatedly.
Until she doesn’t have to wonder whether anything has actually changed.
Now that is character development.
Will I still read about morally gray fictional men making catastrophically questionable decisions?
Obviously.
I am a Romanceaholic, not a quitter. ♡
But if he breaks her heart, I expect consequences.
We have officially retired from unpaid fictional rehabilitation work. Bring accountability. Bring growth. And darling… bring the grovel.
What book gave you a grovel so satisfying you actually forgave the man?
