I just finished the Essex Sisters series…
And I already miss them.
Not just the romances. Not just the dukes, earls, rakes, scandals, forced marriages, secret desires, and breathtaking declarations of love.
I miss the sisters.
From the very first page, this series felt like stepping into the middle of a family trying desperately to hold itself together after loss. Suddenly orphaned, burdened by debts, and left under the questionable guardianship of the perpetually drunk Duke of Holbrook, Tess, Annabel, Imogen, and Josie have every reason to fall apart.
Instead, they become each other’s greatest source of strength.
And that bond became the heart of the entire series.
This was:
- passionate, witty romances filled with longing, tension, and unforgettable chemistry
- heartbreak, misunderstandings, impossible choices, and characters who had to fight for their happily-ever-afters
A sisterhood so genuine, messy, loving, and loyal that it overshadowed even some of the romances
Watching them go from four young women struggling to navigate society on their own to confident heroines finding both love and their place in the world?
Yeah… I was completely invested.
And the way everything came together over four books???
Absolutely worth every page.
Much Ado About You introduces the eldest sister, Tess, who shoulders the impossible responsibility of securing not only her own future but also those of her sisters. Practical, intelligent, and endlessly self-sacrificing, Tess believes duty must come before desire until she finds herself engaged to one of London’s most notorious rakes.
Her romance with Lucius Felton is filled with emotional vulnerability, reluctant attraction, and the terrifying realization that love might be worth risking everything for.
Kiss Me, Annabel follows beautiful, ambitious Annabel, who is determined to marry wealth and security after years of hardship. Her carefully laid plans collapse when she finds herself thrown together with the impoverished Scottish Earl of Ardmore.
Their relationship sparkles with banter, stubborn attraction, and some of the best chemistry in the series. Watching Annabel slowly realize that the qualities she truly needs in a husband can’t be measured in income was incredibly satisfying.
The Taming of the Duke may be the most emotionally layered installment. Romantic Imogen wants freedom, independence, and passion, but she becomes entangled in a complicated situation involving the Duke of Holbrook and his mysterious brother.
Filled with mistaken identities, hidden feelings, and simmering tension, this book explores desire, vulnerability, and the act of seeing beyond appearances.
Pleasure for Pleasure gives unconventional Josie her moment to shine, and what a finale it is. Josie has never fit society’s expectations, and she refuses to start now.
Her romance is playful, heartfelt, and wonderfully chaotic, delivering a satisfying conclusion not only for her love story but for the entire family we’ve grown to love.
But as much as I enjoyed every romance, the real magic of this series was the way Eloisa James never let us forget the Essex sisters belonged to one another first.
They celebrated together.
They argued.
They meddled.
They offered terrible advice.
They protected each other fiercely.
Every book reminded me that while romantic love was important, family was just as powerful. The sisters appeared throughout each other’s stories, creating a sense of continuity and emotional depth that made every happily-ever-after feel richer.
By the final page, it didn’t feel like I was saying goodbye to four separate couples.
It felt like I was saying goodbye to a family.
If you want a series where the characters survive heartbreak, scandal, impossible circumstances, and society’s expectations while finding both love and themselves…
If you love interconnected romances with unforgettable heroines…
If you want sisterhood that feels just as important as the love stories…
Start this series.
Just be prepared to fall in love with all four sisters.
🖤 Why I’m Obsessed 🖤 Romanceaholic’s Official Swoon Stamp
The Essex Sisters series reminded me why family-centered historical romances are so irresistible. While each book delivers its own romance, complete with swoon-worthy heroes, emotional conflicts, and satisfying happily-ever-afters, the true strength of the series lies in the relationships among Tess, Annabel, Imogen, and Josie.
Their bond feels authentic in a way that many sibling relationships in romance novels don’t. They aren’t perfect. They disagree, interfere in each other’s lives, judge each other’s choices, and occasionally create more problems than they solve. Yet beneath every argument is unwavering loyalty and love. No matter how complicated their circumstances become, they remain each other’s safe place.
I loved watching the sisters evolve throughout the series. Tess learns that responsibility doesn’t mean sacrificing her own happiness. Annabel discovers that security and love aren’t always found where she expects. Imogen embraces both her independence and her heart. Josie refuses to become the woman society demands she be and instead creates her own path. Their individual journeys are rewarding, but seeing them continue to support one another through every triumph and disaster is what makes the series feel so emotionally rich.
Eloisa James also excels at creating interconnected stories. Characters from previous books continue to play important roles, relationships deepen over time, and every romance feels like part of a larger family narrative rather than a standalone love story. By the final book, it genuinely feels as though you’ve spent years alongside these characters, celebrating their victories and suffering through their heartbreaks with them.
What stayed with me most wasn’t a single romantic moment or dramatic plot twist—it was the feeling of belonging these sisters created for one another. Their love stories were wonderful, but their family was unforgettable.
The romances gave me butterflies. The humor kept me smiling. The emotional moments hit exactly where they needed to. But it was the Essex sisters themselves who made me keep turning pages and made saying goodbye at the end surprisingly difficult.
This is the kind of series that leaves you feeling as though you’ve become part of the family, and that’s what made it so special.
