There comes a time in every Romanceaholic’s life when you realize… love isn’t the only thing that can break your heart. Sometimes it’s a $14.99 eBook with no plot and a spicy scene written like a poorly worded grocery list.
Once upon a time, romance eBooks were our guilty pleasure, budget-friendly, spicy, and delivered straight to our Kindle in seconds.
A $3.99 price tag for 300 pages of angst and abs? Yes, please. Fast forward to 2025, and now it’s $13.99 for a novella that ends on a cliffhanger, has no epilogue, and zero spice.
This isn’t romance. It’s robbery with a rose gold filter.
Love Shouldn’t Come With Sticker Shock
We’re not saying authors shouldn’t get paid, hello, we adore our romance queens and kings, but when eBook prices start creeping into hardcover territory, something’s off.
Let’s break it down.
Q: What’s the most you’re willing to pay for a romance eBook?
🖤 My personal cap is $6.99 to $9.99.
But once we cross into $12.99+ for a digital file? Babe. That’s a ticket to heartbreak and not the fictional kind.
Q: Have you ever paid $$$ for a novella and felt absolutely scammed?
🖤 Yes. Too many times. I one-clicked a “steamy holiday novella” for $7.99, only to find it was 68 pages of zero spice, with the couple getting engaged after just one kiss and two hot chocolates. I felt betrayed. Like, Romeo and Juliet-level betrayed.
Q: Do you expect spice, quality, or BOTH at higher price points?
🖤 Both, duh. If I’m paying a premium, I expect a gripping plot, decent editing, no typos in Chapter One, and to be emotionally wrecked and a little bit sweaty. That’s the whole point.
Q: Should authors price based on length, quality, or vibes?
🖤 Ideally? A mix. Length matters, yes, I said it, but quality counts too. I’d rather pay $5.99 for a beautifully written 200-page novella than $12.99 for a 400-page mess. And sometimes? Vibes do justify a price tag if the cover is stunning, the author’s voice is swoony, and the trope hits all the right buttons? I’ll splurge. Once.
Hot Take of the Week: The Math Ain’t Mathing
“Why am I paying hardcover prices for a book I can’t even hold in my hands?”
“Why is a novella the same price as a full-length novel?”
“Why does it feel like I’m paying more and getting less?”
Here’s the tea: eBook inflation is very real, and readers are getting fed up. Yes, we want to support authors. Yes, we’ll pay for quality. But we’re also smart, loyal, and broke.
And don’t even get me started on KU authors who also price their books high for non-subscribers. It’s like we’re being punished for not committing to Kindle Unlimited.
