Marriage of Convenience – Because Nothing Heals Emotional Wounds Like Sharing a Tax Bracket

Welcome back, my emotionally repressed, legally bound Romanceaholics

Today on Trope Therapy, we’re throwing rice, signing prenups, and pretending this is just business until it absolutely isn’t. That’s right, babes. It’s time for: Marriage of Convenience – Because Nothing Heals Emotional Wounds Like Sharing a Tax Bracket.

Listen. There’s no greater setup for slow-burn sexual tension, mutual pining, and staring across a shared king bed like “oops, one of us is catching feelings” than two people who got married for every reason except love.

And yet… love always shows up in the most unhinged, heart-clenching, buttoned-up-but-barely-holding-on way possible.

1. It’s “I don’t love you” with a side of “but I’ll die for you”

They get married to save the family business. To keep a title. For inheritance. For a green card. For the image. For drama.

But somewhere between fake honeymoon photos and calling each other “my wife” or “my husband” a little too seriously…

They start falling.

And it hurts because they never planned on this. They didn’t ask for real feelings. But now one of them is making tea during an anxiety spiral, and the other is internally combusting.

2. The angst is rich. Like, multi-millionaire rich.

They’re married, but sleeping in separate rooms.

They’re hosting dinner parties together, smiling for the press, and crying into their pillow at night.

They want to touch. They don’t touch. Until one night… they do.

And suddenly it’s:

  •   “This was a mistake.”
  •   “We said no feelings.”
  •   “Why does your voice sound like home?”

NO ONE IS OKAY.

3. It’s a slow-burn DELICACY

This trope thrives on tension. The little glances. The soft gestures. The quiet realization that they know each other in a way no one else ever will.

One starts cooking the other’s favorite meal without thinking.

One defends the other in public like it’s instinct.

One gets sick and the other panics like they’ve been in love the whole time because they have.

By the time the love confession hits? We’re crying into our legally binding documents.

Final Verdict?

Marriage of Convenience is emotionally expensive, slow-burning gold. It’s pining wrapped in paperwork. It’s passion buried under professionalism. It’s the best kind of lie because it always becomes the truth.

So, tell me, my contractually obligated cuties, what’s your favorite marriage of convenience story that made you sob, scream, or throw your Kindle across the room?
