And as romance readers who value consent, representation, and emotional depth, we have to talk about where the genre still fumbles. Because if we’re going to celebrate the swoons, we also need to confront the cringe.

Here’s where romance still has some growing up to do and why, even as we love it, we’re holding it accountable.

1. Consent Isn’t Always Clear Or Even There

Look, we love a passionate hero. But when “alpha male” turns into “ignores her boundaries,” it’s a big nope. Some older and even newer romances blur the lines of consent in the name of “passion,”but passion without permission? That’s not hot, it’s harmful.

We want desire that respects. Heat that listens. And kisses that don’t require second-guessing.

2. We Need More Diverse Love Stories

Progress is happening, but it’s not enough yet. The shelves are still overwhelmingly white, cishet, and able-bodied. Where are the Indigenous romances? The fat girls who get the guy without changing? The queer and trans love stories that don’t end in trauma?

Love is universal. Romance publishing needs to act like it.

3. Toxic Tropes Still Get Romanticized

Jealousy isn’t always passion. Control isn’t always love. And a tragic past doesn’t excuse emotionally abusive behavior. Some books still glamorize toxicity under the guise of “he’s just protective.” Let’s normalize calling that what it is: 🚩🚩🚩.

Give us morally gray, not emotionally manipulative. There’s a difference.

4. Mental Health Deserves Better Representation

We’re starting to see trauma and healing in romance, yay! but it’s not always handled with care. Mental illness isn’t a cute personality quirk or a plot twist. Characters deserve real growth, and readers deserve honest portrayals, not stereotypes.
