If you enjoy historical romance that leans gleefully into chaos, confidence, and convoluted identity shenanigans, Man of My Dreams by Johanna Lindsey is an absolute delight. From the start, this story announces that it is here for drama, humor, and a heroine who refuses to sit quietly while life happens to her. Megan Penworthy is wildly unpredictable, breathtakingly bold, and fully convinced she knows exactly who she’s going to marry, whether the gentleman in question agrees or not.
Naturally, fate laughs. Instead of immediately landing her duke, Megan finds herself sparring with Devlin Jefferys, a so-called “common” horse breeder who is far too handsome and far too intriguing to ignore. Of course, he isn’t Devlin at all. Sir Ambrose St. James, hiding behind a false identity, decides seduction is the perfect way to derail Megan’s carefully laid plans. Meanwhile, sparks fly.
Then sparks explode. Consequently, chaos ensues in the most entertaining way possible.
Big Personalities, Bigger Drama
One of the book’s biggest strengths is Megan herself. She’s confident, unapologetic, and refreshingly ambitious, especially for a historical heroine. Additionally, the humor is sharp, and the pacing keeps the story moving briskly. However, some readers may find the misunderstandings a bit drawn out, and the plot leans heavily into classic romance tropes. Still, if you love Lindsey’s signature style, that’s part of the charm.
Compared to other Lindsey novels, Man of My Dreams feels especially playful.
The reveal when masks finally drop, and Megan realizes who she’s truly fallen for, is deliciously satisfying. It’s dramatic, emotional, and perfectly earned.
Romanceaholic Approved
Yes, I absolutely recommend this book. It’s fun. It’s dramatic. It’s unapologetically romantic. If you love bold heroines, charming rogues, and stories that don’t take themselves too seriously, Man of My Dreams delivers exactly what the title promises.
