Discover Why They Lasted: Megan & Devlin
Man of My Dreams by Johanna Lindsey
They lasted because the man she dreamed of could never compete with the man she actually came to know.
❤️ Why They Lasted
Megan Penworthy knows exactly who she intends to marry.
There is only one small problem.
She has never met him.
Ambrose St. James, Duke of Wrothston, has already been given a starring role in Megan’s happily ever after based almost entirely on reputation, imagination, and the inconvenient fact that she has decided no other man will do.
Then Devlin Jefferys walks into her life.
And suddenly the plan becomes considerably more complicated.
Because Devlin is not the man Megan believes she wants.
He’s a horse breeder.
He’s arrogant.
Infuriating.
Entirely too bold.
And unfortunately for Megan’s carefully constructed future, he’s also the most handsome man she has ever seen.
The attraction is immediate.
Welcome?
Absolutely not.
Megan knows she’s playing with fire every time she gets near him, and Devlin seems perfectly happy to provide the matches.
But that’s what makes their relationship so much fun.
Megan begins the story chasing an idea of love while the real thing keeps standing directly in front of her and irritating her.
She thinks she knows what the man of her dreams should look like on paper.
A duke.
A title.
A future she has already imagined.
Devlin doesn’t fit neatly into that fantasy.
He challenges it.
He teases her.
He provokes her.
He makes her feel things she hadn’t accounted for when she planned her perfect marriage.
And, unknown to Megan, the irony is delicious:
Devlin Jefferys is Ambrose St. James.
The man she doesn’t want and the man she’s determined to marry are one and the same.
But the disguise creates something far more important than a romantic complication.
It gives Megan the opportunity to fall for the man before the title.
Not the duke she has built inside her imagination.
Not the reputation.
Not the fantasy.
Him.
And it gives Ambrose something equally important.
Megan doesn’t simply admire him.
She challenges him.
For a notorious rogue accustomed to knowing exactly how to handle women, Megan is gloriously inconvenient.
She has plans of her own.
Opinions of her own.
A temper.
A remarkable ability to provoke him.
And absolutely no intention of making his life easy.
What begins as his determination to interfere with Megan’s ridiculous plan to marry the Duke of Wrothston becomes the very thing he never anticipated.
He falls for the woman who was trying to marry him without knowing she was already falling for him.
That’s the delicious contradiction at the center of their romance.
Megan thinks she knows her dream.
Ambrose thinks he knows the game.
Neither of them knows what love is about to do to the plan.
Because eventually attraction becomes harder to dismiss.
The arguments matter because the person matters.
The teasing becomes intimacy.
The irritation becomes familiarity.
And the imagined man begins losing ground to the very real one standing in front of her.
Megan doesn’t need the perfect man she created in her head.
She needs the man who can meet her fire with his own.
And Ambrose doesn’t need a woman he can simply charm and forget.
He needs the woman capable of making the notorious rogue imagine something he never planned on wanting.
Forever.
That is why they lasted.

The Words That Stayed
“He stood there, sweaty and dusty, and she thought him the most handsome man she’d ever seen.”
Oh, Megan.
The plan was already in danger.
Before she knows anything about Devlin that should make him suitable for the future she has imagined, she responds to the man himself.
Not his title.
Not his position.
Not the fantasy attached to his name.
Him.
And that distinction will eventually matter enormously.
“He was scandalous but so beautiful, like a piece of fine art.”
Megan knows he’s trouble.
She knows getting too close to him is playing with fire.
She does it anyway.
Because Devlin awakens something the distant Duke of Wrothston cannot possibly compete with yet:
feeling.
One man exists safely inside her imagination.
The other makes her blood run considerably less safely.
“We’re alone now. Would you like to examine me with your hands as thoroughly as you did with your eyes?”
Sir.
There are subtler ways to flirt.
Devlin has apparently decided none of them are necessary.
Their chemistry works because he doesn’t allow Megan to remain safely behind the role she’s chosen for herself. He sees her curiosity, calls attention to it, and forces her to acknowledge the attraction she’d much rather pretend isn’t happening.
He knows she’s looking.
More importantly, she knows he knows.
And now everybody is in trouble.
“She thinks she’s going to marry the Duke of Wrothston.”
This might be one of the funniest truths underneath their entire romance.
Because Devlin knows something Megan doesn’t.
She has already selected him.
She simply has no idea that the infuriating horse breeder disrupting her plans is the same man at the center of them.
But what makes the deception meaningful isn’t merely the reveal waiting underneath it.
It’s what happens before Megan knows.
She gets to know a version of Ambrose without the title she thought she wanted.
And he gets to discover whether the woman determined to marry the duke could ever want the man.
“Desire isn’t selective of place, time, or the individual.”
Megan’s original plan depends upon the belief that love and marriage can be decided before feeling ever enters the equation.
Devlin is the disruption of that certainty.
Attraction doesn’t ask whether he fits her plan.
Love doesn’t consult the list.
And sometimes the person who changes everything looks absolutely nothing like the future we thought we’d chosen.
Until suddenly we realize:
perhaps they were the future all along.

🖤 Why It Earned Romanceaholic’s Heart
Megan and Devlin earned their place because their relationship plays with one of romance’s most enduring questions:
Do we fall in love with the person we imagined or the person who makes imagination irrelevant?
Megan begins convinced she already knows the man of her dreams.
Ambrose begins convinced he can interfere with her plans without becoming part of them.
Both are spectacularly wrong.
Because underneath the disguise, the arguments, the attraction, and all that wonderfully inconvenient chemistry, they discover something neither one planned.
Megan falls for the man before she can fully understand what his name means.
And Ambrose finds the one woman capable of turning a rogue’s game into something real.
The dream was never really the duke.
It wasn’t the title.
It wasn’t the perfect future Megan had constructed before the story began.
The dream was finding someone who could surprise her enough to make her want a different future.
And perhaps that’s why Man of My Dreams is such a fitting title.
Because sometimes the man of your dreams isn’t the man you’ve spent all your time imagining.
Sometimes he’s the maddening man standing directly in front of you
challenging you,
tempting you,
ruining your perfectly good plan,
and becoming someone you never thought to dream of.
That’s why Megan and Devlin belong in the Love Earned Gallery.
Because the greatest love stories aren’t simply told.
They’re earned.
