I just finished the Mercenaries for Hire series by Jillian West…
And I’m not okay.
This was:
- intense, addictive, and packed with nonstop tension
- emotional, heartbreaking, and impossible not to feel deeply
- dark, suspenseful, and filled with dangerous secrets
This series completely consumed me from the very first pages.
Jillian West takes everything I love about omegaverse romance, protective heroes, emotional bonds, found family, danger, devotion, and high-stakes relationships and turns it into a series that is impossible to put down.
Whatever It Takes introduces us to Briar, a heroine who is simply trying to survive after escaping a dangerous situation. What starts as a case of mistaken identity leads her straight into the world of Shadow Security, a private security company filled with mercenaries who are every bit as intimidating as their reputation suggests.
What I loved most about Briar’s story was how vulnerable and layered she felt. She’s carrying secrets, trauma, and fears that constantly threaten to catch up with her, yet she never stops fighting for herself. Watching her slowly find safety, trust, and connection with the people around her was incredibly rewarding.
And the men?
Absolutely obsessed.
The Shadow Security crew immediately became one of my favorite fictional groups. They’re protective without being perfect, dangerous when necessary, and fiercely loyal once someone becomes theirs. The found family dynamic woven throughout the story gave every emotional moment even more impact.
But just when I thought I knew where the series was going, Jillian West completely blindsided me with No Escape.
The concept alone had me hooked.
A facility designed to house rabid alphas.
A system built around control, corruption, and exploitation.
An omega trapped in a place she never should have been.
Saylor’s story felt darker, more intense, and far more dangerous from the very beginning. As the daughter of a powerful politician, she assumes someone will come for her. She assumes someone will stop what’s happening.
They’re just not fast enough.
The atmosphere throughout this book was incredibly tense. Every chapter carried a sense of urgency and uncertainty that kept me glued to the pages. The facility itself felt claustrophobic, terrifying, and unpredictable, making it impossible to know who could be trusted and who posed a threat.
And then there are the heroes.
The lengths these men are willing to go to for Saylor had me completely emotional. The devotion, the loyalty, the desperation to reach her before it’s too late, delivered everything I want from protective romance heroes.
Then comes One Way Out, and somehow the stakes become even higher.
This book takes everything established in No Escape and pushes it to the breaking point. The truth behind the rabid alpha facilities is revealed piece by piece, and every revelation feels darker and more horrifying than the last.
The rescue mission, the danger, the impossible choices, and the emotional weight of what everyone has endured kept me fully invested from beginning to end.
What stood out most throughout this duet was how well Jillian balanced action with emotional connection. Even during the most intense moments, the relationships remained the heart of the story.
The bonds between the characters never felt overshadowed by the suspense.
If anything, the danger made those relationships stronger.
The trust.
The sacrifice.
The devotion.
The absolute certainty that these men would tear apart an entire institution if it meant protecting the people they love.
I ate every single page up.
One of my favorite things about this entire series is that it never loses sight of its emotional core. Yes, there are dangerous situations. Yes, there are high-stakes confrontations and suspenseful moments that will have your heart racing.
But beneath all of that is a story about survival, healing, belonging, and finding people willing to stand beside you when the world gives you every reason not to trust anyone.
Each book pulled me deeper until I was fully invested and unable to stop.
I became attached to these characters.
I worried about them.
I celebrated their victories.
And I desperately needed them to get their happy ending.
And the way it all came together???
Worth it.
Start this series immediately.
Just be prepared.
Because Shadow Security will pull you in, break your heart a little, put it back together again, and leave you thinking about these characters long after you’ve turned the final page.
