Good morning, romance reader ♡
“I opened the book for emotional support. Things escalated.”
I had a very simple plan.
Find something comforting.
Read a few chapters.
Feel better.
That was it.
And for approximately twelve pages, everything was going beautifully.
Then somebody revealed a secret.
The supposedly safe love interest started acting suspicious.
Two people who absolutely should not have chemistry developed enough tension to become a public safety concern.
And the author who I trusted, by the way decided my emotional stability was apparently optional.
Excuse me?
This was supposed to be my comfort read.
Now I’m pacing.
Highlighting passages aggressively.
Whispering don’t you dare at a paperback like it has the ability to reconsider its choices.
And obviously I can’t stop reading because I need to know what happens.
So congratulations to me.
I opened a book because I needed emotional support and somehow acquired additional emotions requiring support.
Classic reader behavior. ♡
But would I do it again?
Immediately.
Because sometimes we don’t actually want our comfort reads to behave.
We want them to grab us by the feelings, drag us through absolute fictional chaos, and eventually put us back together somewhere near the happily ever after.
Romanceaholic came for comfort. Stayed for the emotional damage. No regrets.
What “comfort read” completely betrayed you in the best possible way?
