Good morning, romance reader ♡

Good morning, romance reader ♡

“Touch her and die? Unfortunately, I am listening.”

There are certain things I would find deeply concerning in real life.

A man lurking in the shadows.

A suspiciously extensive collection of weapons.

Someone casually announcing that he would burn an entire kingdom to the ground if anybody hurt the woman he loves.

Sir. We need to discuss your conflict-resolution skills.

But put that same man in a fantasy romance?

Give him a tragic backstory, a dangerous reputation, and one woman who makes him forget every rule he’s ever lived by?

Oh.

Now I’m listening.

Because there is something ridiculously compelling about the fictional man who terrifies absolutely everyone…

Except her.

The one who barely speaks.

Who looks at the rest of the world like it’s an inconvenience.

Who has spent centuries building walls so high that nobody even bothers trying to climb them.

And then she walks into the room.

Suddenly, the terrifying man is paying attention.

He notices when she’s uncomfortable.

He remembers who made her cry.

He steps between her and danger without hesitation.

And when somebody threatens her?

That calm, terrifying little smile appears.

You know the one.

The one that says:

You have made an unfortunate decision.

And I, a perfectly reasonable adult woman, am sitting on my couch thinking…

Well, that’s romantic.

Is it healthy relationship advice?

Absolutely not.

Would I recommend threatening kingdoms as a communication strategy?

Also no.

But fiction gives us room to enjoy the deliciously dramatic without needing it to become real life.

And underneath all the danger and morally questionable decisions, I think there’s something else we’re responding to.

The fantasy of being so deeply valued that someone notices when you’re afraid.

Someone who takes your safety seriously.

Someone powerful enough to frighten the world but gentle enough to make you feel safe beside them.

The contrast, romance reader. THE CONTRAST.

Because the moment that dangerous fictional man lowers his voice, softens his expression, and asks her, “Are you all right?”

I’m finished.

Close the curtains.

Cancel my plans.

I live in this book now.

Romanceaholic would like to clarify that we support healthy relationships in real life and absolutely unhinged levels of fictional devotion on the page. ♡

Now tell me…

Which fictional man made you think, “That is an alarming number of red flags… but please continue”?
